Fertility Is About More Than Getting Pregnant

Reproductive health doesn’t exist in isolation.

Ovulation, menstrual-cycle health, egg and sperm quality, thyroid function, metabolic health, nutrition, sleep, stress, inflammation, age, lifestyle, and underlying medical conditions can all contribute to the fertility picture.

Our role is to help you understand which factors are most relevant to you.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all fertility protocol, your Naturopathic Doctor will take the time to understand your history, review existing investigations and laboratory results, and create a practical plan based on your needs, goals, and timeline.

When Should You Consider Fertility + Preconception Care?

You don’t need to have an infertility diagnosis—or even be actively trying to conceive—to book.

We work with individuals and couples who are:

  • Preparing for pregnancy
  • Trying to conceive naturally
  • Looking to optimize health before conception
  • Experiencing irregular or absent ovulation
  • Navigating PCOS
  • Living with endometriosis
  • Investigating unexplained infertility
  • Experiencing recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Managing thyroid or metabolic concerns that may affect reproductive health
  • Looking to support egg or sperm health
  • Undergoing fertility investigations
  • Preparing for IUI or IVF
  • Planning an egg retrieval or embryo transfer
  • Looking for evidence-informed nutrition, lifestyle and supplement guidance during fertility treatment

Wherever you are in the process, we’ll meet you there.

Preconception Care: Building a Healthy Foundation

You don’t have to wait until you’re having difficulty conceiving to think about fertility.

Preconception is an opportunity to look at your health before pregnancy and identify areas that may benefit from attention.

Ideally, this can begin approximately three months before trying to conceive, but there is no perfect time to start.

Your preconception plan may include:

  • Menstrual cycle and ovulation assessment
  • Review of existing blood work and fertility investigations
  • Nutrition and nutrient assessment
  • Prenatal and supplement review
  • Thyroid health
  • Blood sugar, insulin and metabolic health
  • Sleep, stress and movement
  • Medication and supplement considerations
  • Male fertility and sperm health
  • Additional laboratory testing when clinically appropriate

The goal isn’t perfection before pregnancy. It’s to identify meaningful, modifiable factors and help you build a strong foundation for conception, pregnancy, and long-term health.

Supporting You Through IVF + IUI

Fertility treatment can become complicated quickly. Medications, supplements, appointments, testing, nutrition advice, and conflicting recommendations can leave you wondering what you should—or shouldn’t—be doing.

Dr. Caputi works alongside fertility clinics and reproductive specialists to provide complementary support before and during treatment.

Depending on your needs and stage of treatment, care may include:

  • Reviewing your fertility history and previous investigations
  • Reviewing your fertility clinic treatment plan and medication calendar
  • Nutrition and lifestyle support
  • Reviewing supplements for appropriateness during treatment
  • Supporting metabolic, thyroid, and overall health
  • Adapting recommendations through ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer
  • Fertility acupuncture when appropriate
  • Support through the two-week wait and into early pregnancy
  • Collaboration with your fertility clinic or healthcare team when appropriate

The goal is not to change the medical protocol prescribed by your fertility specialist or promise a particular outcome.

It’s to make sure the care surrounding your fertility treatment is individualized, evidence-informed, safe, and complementary to your medical care.

Fertility Care for Both Partners

Fertility is not solely a women’s health issue.

When sperm is part of the conception plan, we encourage consideration of both partners’ health from the beginning.

Naturopathic fertility care for male partners may include review of:

  • Semen analysis results
  • Nutrition and nutrient status
  • Medications and supplements
  • Sleep and stress
  • Exercise and metabolic health
  • Smoking, alcohol and substance use
  • Heat and occupational exposures
  • Other lifestyle or medical factors that may influence reproductive health

Naturopathic care complements—not replaces—appropriate semen analysis, fertility-clinic investigation, or assessment by a reproductive urologist when indicated.

Supportive Fertility Acupuncture

Acupuncture can also be incorporated into your fertility care at The Root.

Some patients choose fertility acupuncture while trying to conceive naturally or during IUI and IVF to support relaxation, stress management, physical comfort, and overall well-being during what can be an emotionally and physically demanding process.

Acupuncture is individualized to your health and the stage of your fertility journey. During assisted reproductive treatment, your practitioner will also consider your medications, stimulation or transfer protocol, and any recommendations from your fertility clinic.

It’s important to us that acupuncture is presented realistically: it can be a valuable supportive therapy, but we don’t promise that acupuncture will increase pregnancy or live-birth rates.

Acupuncture + Your Insurance Coverage

At The Root, fertility acupuncture is available through both our acupuncture and naturopathic teams.

Acupuncture provided by one of our Naturopathic Doctors is billed as Naturopathic Medicine and may be eligible for reimbursement under your naturopathic benefits.

Acupuncture provided by our Registered Acupuncturist is billed as Acupuncture and may be eligible under acupuncture benefits.

Coverage varies by insurance plan.

We provide thoughtful, individualized care that works alongside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Naturopathic Doctor help with fertility?

Naturopathic Doctors can provide complementary care for many of the broader factors connected to reproductive health, including nutrition, menstrual-cycle and ovulatory health, metabolic health, thyroid function, sleep, stress, nutrient status, and preconception planning.

When fertility investigation or medical treatment is appropriate, naturopathic care is designed to complement that care—not replace it.

Do I need a fertility diagnosis before booking?

No.

Many patients come to us because they want to optimize their health before pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Others have already been diagnosed with PMOS (PCOS), endometriosis, diminished ovarian reserve, recurrent pregnancy loss, unexplained infertility, or another reproductive concern.

Your care is tailored to wherever you are in your fertility journey.

When should I start preconception care?

Ideally, approximately three months before trying to conceive can provide useful time to review nutrition, lifestyle, medications and supplements, menstrual health, laboratory results, and other modifiable health factors.

But it’s never “too late.” If you’re already trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment, we’ll prioritize recommendations according to your timeline.

Can I see a Naturopathic Doctor during IVF or IUI?

Yes. Dr. Annaleeza Caputi provides Integrative Fertility Care for patients before and during IUI and IVF.

Recommendations are carefully considered alongside your fertility clinic’s treatment plan, medications, and stage of treatment.

Do you work with fertility clinics?

Yes. When appropriate and with your consent, we can work collaboratively with fertility clinics, reproductive endocrinologists, family physicians, obstetricians, midwives, and other members of your healthcare team.

Can you support male fertility?

Yes. When sperm is part of the conception plan, fertility care can include assessment of relevant health, lifestyle, nutrition, supplement, and semen-analysis factors.

Appropriate medical fertility investigation remains an important part of care.

Do I need blood work before my first appointment?

No.

If you already have blood work, imaging, semen analysis, or fertility-clinic investigations, bring them with you. Your Naturopathic Doctor can review your existing results and determine whether any additional assessment may be useful.

Is fertility acupuncture safe during IVF?

Acupuncture is generally considered a low-risk therapy when provided by an appropriately trained practitioner who understands your fertility treatment and adapts care to the stage of your cycle.

Your practitioner should know your medications, treatment protocol, and any restrictions provided by your fertility clinic.
