What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

Naturopathic Doctors are regulated healthcare providers who complete a minimum of eight years of post-secondary education and pass national and provincial board exams. See how we’re trained, licensed, and regulated in Ontario.

Clinical Lab Testing

We use comprehensive lab testing and in-clinic assessments to understand how your body’s systems connect — from hormones and thyroid function to nutrient status and inflammation — so your treatment plan is built on more than guesswork.

Virtual Naturopathic Care in Ontario

Access the same personalized, unhurried care from anywhere in Ontario. Virtual appointments include the same dedicated time as an in-person visit, with in-person assessments arranged whenever needed.

What to Expect

  1. Before your first visit, you’ll complete a detailed health intake form so we can begin understanding your story. We’ll review your health goals, current concerns, medical history, medications, supplements, nutrition, sleep, digestion, stress, lifestyle, and any recent lab work to ensure we have the fullest picture of your health.
  2. Your Comprehensive Initial Consultation (up to 90 minutes) gives us the time to listen, ask questions, and connect the dots. During in-clinic visits, we’ll perform any relevant physical examinations. If your appointment is virtual, we’ll discuss whether any physical assessments are needed and how to complete them.
  3. From there, your Naturopathic Doctor will create a personalized, evidence-informed treatment plan tailored to your goals. When appropriate, we may recommend blood work or additional laboratory testing, but there is often so much we can begin improving simply by taking the time to listen and provide a thorough intake.
  4. You’ll leave your first visit with clear next steps, a personalized plan, and an understanding of why each recommendation has been made. Follow-up visits are always individualized, allowing us to monitor your progress, review test results, refine your treatment plan, and continue moving you toward your health goals.

This is the kind of healthcare we believe everyone deserves—care that takes the time to listen, looks at the whole picture, and helps you feel heard, supported, and empowered.

At The Root, we believe everyone deserves healthcare that takes the time to listen, looks at the whole picture, and supports lasting health. From the moment you walk through our doors, our goal is simple: for you to feel heard, cared for, and empowered on your journey to better health.

From the moment I walked into The Root Natural Health Clinic, my experience has been simply wonderful. From the lovely tea that is offered upon your arrival, to the Zen-like atmosphere, and of course the amazing staff. I’ve been seeing Dr. Lauren Wedlock Brown as my Naturopathic Dr. and have been impressed with her level of expertise, calm and nurturing aura, and her professionalism.

What is a Naturopathic Doctor?

A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is a regulated healthcare provider in Ontario who combines evidence-informed medicine with a whole-person approach to care. Becoming licensed requires a minimum of eight years of post-secondary education, including a four-year post-graduate program at a recognized naturopathic medical school, along with national and provincial board exams. What can I expect at my first visit?

Before your first appointment, you’ll complete a detailed health intake form so we can begin understanding your story. Your Comprehensive Initial Consultation (up to 90 minutes) gives your Naturopathic Doctor time to review your health history, symptoms, medications, lifestyle and goals in depth. From there, you’ll leave with a personalized, evidence-informed treatment plan and a clear understanding of your next steps.

Do I need a referral to see a Naturopathic Doctor?

No referral is required. You can book directly with one of our Naturopathic Doctors, whether you’re addressing a specific health concern or looking to optimize your long-term wellbeing.

Are naturopathic services covered by insurance?

Many extended health insurance plans include coverage for services provided by a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, though coverage varies by plan. Please note that laboratory testing ordered by a Naturopathic Doctor is not covered by OHIP; some testing and consultation fees may be eligible for reimbursement through extended health benefits. We recommend confirming your individual naturopathic benefits with your insurance provider.

Can I see a Naturopathic Doctor virtually?

Yes. Our Naturopathic Doctors offer secure virtual appointments to patients throughout Ontario, with the same dedicated time and individualized approach as an in-person consultation. If a physical examination is ever needed, we’ll help arrange it.
